Bolivia 4-1 Uruguay (WC2014): Saucedo x3!
Oh, this is too good for words.
We’ve had our standard noncommittal WC campaign, to the extent that we couldn’t even beat our Peruvian brothers at home three days ago, but every so often we occasionally burst out with something inexplicable. And if that inexplicable magic can be labelled “altitude” by haters, well so what? We are a poor, poor country, the least developed country in South America, with no sea borders and only 10 million people to boot. It’s an unbalanced world, we’re on its underside, so we’ll takes whatever advantage we can gets.
In our corresponding match against Uruguay four years ago, one I’d argue was the most important for Bolivia of the last decade as it offered us a chance to become one of the WC 2010 contenders, we scorched a 2-0 halftime lead and then in the Bolivian way fluffed it, blew a series of chances to seal the game and saw Uruguay tie it at the end.
That was not an issue this time, as Carlos Saucedo wrapped up the match with a hat-trick within 10 minutes after halftime, to leave the stadium cruising in victory for 40 minutes. His first two goals were identical, in which he cleverly slid in to touch in a 5th-minute corner kick at the far post and then only just get another touch in at the near post from a 50th-minute free kick. In the 55th Rudy Cardozo beautifully put the ball on Saucedo’s head a metre from goal after a sharp run.
Two free kicks whizzed by at either end in the meantime, the first from our man Mojica in the 26th minute, and the last from Uruguay’s Luis Suarez in the 80th.
This is one to savour. Great goals, great result, and for today great times! You can watch the goals here. Cool goals too!
